Donald Trump’s newest ultimatum to introduce an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods has been called a “prime illustration” of American hypocrisy, as stated by the Beijing administration.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson also stated that the nation could implement its own unspecified “responsive actions” if the American leader follows through on his warning, noting that the country was “fearless” of a looming commercial battle.

Last Friday, Trump retaliated at the Chinese government’s action to tighten its regulations for foreign shipments of critical elements, accusing Beijing of “turning aggressive” and attempting to hold the international market “under its control”.

Additionally, he vowed to withdraw from a planned talks with Beijing’s head of state President Xi, which was arranged for a summit in the Republic of Korea later this month.

The former president’s remarks on last Friday shook stock exchanges, with the S&P 500 share index dropping nearly three percent, marking its steepest fall since last spring.

These statements reignited concerns of a commercial dispute between the US and China.

In May, the two sides had consented to eliminate significant levies on each other’s products, which had raised the prospect of trade halting between the two nations.

This left, United States levies on products from China subject to an additional 30% levy compared with the year’s onset, while items from the United States entering China face a ten percent duty.

The most recent comments from China – released by the relevant government department in the form of formal replies to press queries – echoed language from the peak of the ongoing trade dispute.

Officials denounced US export restrictions on electronic components while supporting China’s own export controls on rare earth minerals as “normal actions” to protect state interests and that of the global community.

The spokesperson stated that for “a long time”, the US had “overstretched the concept of national security, misused export control measures and “implemented” biased policies against the Chinese nation.

“Turning to” tariff threats is not the correct approach to interact with Beijing,” the official commented.

“Beijing’s stance” on a tariff war has consistently been unchanging: we are not seeking one, but we are fearless of one.”

The previous week, China declared it was reinforcing foreign shipment restrictions on rare earths and additional substances essential to cutting-edge industry.

The action was viewed as a key move, as the nation processes about the vast majority of the world’s rare earths, which are utilized in products such as renewable energy components and smartphones.

Latest statements from Washington and Beijing are being viewed by some as a means of strengthening positions prior to forthcoming discussions.

It is unclear whether a summit between Donald Trump and China’s leader, expected at a summit in the Republic of Korea before month’s end, will go ahead.
